Acquired in 2026, Mountain Lake Preserve was once a Bible and Sports camp of which many locals retain fond memories. Today’s visitors can enjoy a variety of trails. One crosses the meadow adjacent to the parking area and goes to and over the property’s dam. On one side of the dam is the pristine 17 acre Strait’s Pond; on the other a beaver pond with active, though skittish, beavers and their houses. Waterfowl and other birdlife of various kinds can be found on both sides of the dam.
On the other side of the parking area, an old camp road leads visitors past the area where camp buildings once stood and into the woods beyond. An out and back trail takes hikers to a stunning natural amphitheater of massive boulders thrust up from the earth long ago as a result of glacial activity. Here, campers once gathered for both prayer and entertainment.
For the more adventuresome, the trail continues, looping up through woodlands, boulders and rock ledges to the property’s highpoint and then back down again to the parking area.
Future plans will see the Warren Land Trust, in partnership with Kent Land Trust, expand this trail system, ultimately connecting Mountain Lake with WLT’s Cunningham Nature Preserve and KLT’s East Kent Hamlet Preserve. When completed, this system will offer visitors a range of trails, from short to long and easy to challenging; truly something for everyone.
